| Jon, You can change the fate of an endangered species. Five years ago, the federal government gave the provinces and territories a deadline of October 5th, 2017 to create measures to protect and restore the habitat of the threatened woodland caribou. That deadline has now passed. Tell the provinces to protect caribou habitat. Little has been done in the past five years to protect woodland caribou — one of the many species threatened by the sixth great mass extinction that’s affecting mammals everywhere on the planet. The government has largely stayed silent about its plans to protect caribou, except for last spring, when it suggested that the endangered Val-d’Or caribou herd should be moved to a zoo! Our public outcry put a stop to that absurd proposal. But now, we need you to speak up again: urge the provinces to meet their obligations and protect threatened caribou. Sign the petition now. Caribou are vital part of the forest ecosystem. Put simply, a healthy caribou population means a healthy boreal forest. But to thrive, boreal woodland caribou need large areas of natural forest that are not degraded by human activities. So protecting the caribou and its habitat means maintaining a healthy boreal forest and creating sustainable jobs for future generations. We’re calling on the provinces and territories to work hand in hand with First Nations and ensure their free, prior and informed consent for the implementation of woodland caribou conservation plans. Sign the petition now — the caribou need you. http://act.gp/2hvAGBI Shane Head of Forest campaign, Greenpeace Canada |
