Reuters has received a tipoff from several sources close to China’s top leadership that the authorities are planning a new Ministry of Energy. This is part of the predicted shake-up of the country’s central government functions, aimed at downsizing staff numbers and improving efficiency.
The new Ministry of Energy will oversee the power sector, coal, natural gas and oil industries, which currently are managed by the National Energy Administration (NEA), which sits under the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). About 3,000 lawmakers from around the country are expected to hear a detailed explanation of how it will operate. Neither the NEA or the NDRC has responded to the Reuters report.
