“Cities need forests” is a key message from the 250th edition of FAO Forestry’s flagship journal Unasylva, published to coincide with this year’s International Day of Forests (IDF) on 21 March and its theme of “Forests and Sustainable Cities”. In articles that expand on several variations on the IDF theme, experts describe the challenges to and wide-ranging benefits of integrating forests and trees in sustainable urban and peri-urban development. Complementing the experts’ articles in Unasylva 250 is the 2nd of FAO’s IDF 2018 publications Forests and sustainable cities: inspiring stories from around the world. This newly compiled work includes truly encouraging accounts of cities’ attempts to expand their green infrastructure – forests and trees – as part of a more sustainable and resilient model of urban development.
The two FAO publications will be released on 21 March 2018, during the FAO headquarters IDF special event.
