On this day we celebrate real, natural, diverse forests, not monoculture tree plantations, which are not forests at all.
Each year the UN chooses a special theme for the day. This year it is “Forests and Sustainable Cities”, inspiring us to make our cities greener and healthier.
As well as celebrating the importance of forests for the future of our cities, we also focus on the threats that our forests constantly face because of cities: in particular, a growing demand for commodities like wood, meat and palm oil.
And we remember the people that call forests home: communities and Indigenous Peoples that have cared for forests for many generations, and whose lives and rights are innately linked to them.
To celebrate this day we have published aphotoessay about real forests and the threats they are facing. We have also launched two new reports and two short videos on community conservation in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. These reports and videos highlight the key roles that indigenous communities play in conserving forests.
We hope you enjoy them!
