The Paper reports on a new plan to expand China’s forested area by 2025. In a forum hosted by the National Forestry and Grassland Bureau, and several national and international institutions, a plan to develop China’s urban ecosystems was announced. Over 300 cities have undertaken “forest city construction” since 2004, and 138 are officially recognised as “National Forest Cities” in recognition of their higher forest coverage. The National Forest Urban Development Plan will expand efforts to increase urban forest cover. It targets six national-level forest urban areas and another 200 national forest cities by 2020. This will increase to 300 national forest cities by 2025.
