After years of overgrazing and development, grassland in Inner Mongolia is recovering, reports The Paper. The autonomous region is the centre of dairy production and animal husbandry in China. In 2017, it produced just over one billion tonnes of grass, a 2.53% increase on the previous year. Vegetation also increased by 4.3%. Data released by the National Forestry and Prairie Bureau suggests that the ecology of the grassland has recovered to levels previously seen in the 1980s. Making up 40.9% of China’s total land area and 12.9% of the world’s grassland area, the health of China’s grassland is globally significant.
