China installed a total of 24 gigawatts of solar power generation in the first half of the year, but under new government policies aimed at reining in the sector this leaves little space for additional capacity for the rest of the year, reports Jiemian. A solar energy industry association announced on July 26 that the sector continued its rapid growth in the first half of the year, expecting continued strong support from the state. However, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced late May that investment in the sector needed to cool down. The government will limit new solar capacity to 30 gigawatts for 2018, down from 53 gigawatts in 2017. MIIT also plans to shut down solar equipment manufacturers that rely too heavily on financial incentives and fail to innovate.
