Growth in the use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers applied to rice, corn and wheat crops in China stopped in 2017. But there is still a huge overuse problem in the world’s biggest agrochemicals market, reports the Paper. A senior agricultural official told a press conference that just 40% of all the pesticides and chemical fertilisers applied to Chinese farmland were useful in 2010. Nitrogen run-off from fertilisers can pollute rivers and contribute to algal blooms. China has vowed to rein in the usage of agrochemicals on farmland by 2020.
