Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have been high since the Crimea crisis in 2014. The U.S. and its European allies have voiced concerns over Russia's military buildup along Ukraine's border.
Moscow said there was no aggressive intention there, and it needs to ensure its security in response to alleged threats from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a Western defense alliance.
Now, tensions are rising between the West and Russia over Ukraine.
Russia accused the United States on Thursday of ramping up tensions and ignoring Moscow's calls to ease a standoff over Ukraine, a day after Washington announced it would deploy nearly 3,000 extra troops to Poland and Romania.
It is widely believed that if tensions escalate further, Europe's economy could face huge losses, especially on natural gas, since Russia has historically been the EU's largest supplier.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration has been in discussions with several gas exporters, including Qatar, about the possibility of diverting supplies to Europe.
