Last week, I emailed you about our efforts to secure a new legally binding global instrument to address the plastic crisis. Now, we are aiming to show decisionmakers that more than a million people support this action. Will you sign your name to join this worldwide call for a global plastics instrument?
With partners, we’re launching a global petition, calling on governments and representatives convening this month for the resumed Fifth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2) to support a legally binding global instrument — such as a treaty — that addresses the full life cycle of plastics. From downstream pollution of land and water, to the toxic impacts of plastic production and use, the plastic crisis is a life cycle problem, and we need a life cycle solution.
Call on World Leaders to End the Plastics Crisis:
By signing this petition, you join the chorus of over 160 countries and nearly 1,000 organizations calling for a new global treaty to address the full life cycle of plastics. Such an instrument should have time-targeted, measurable, and binding commitments for reduction and prevention, with effective enforcement mechanisms.
If implemented, this instrument would meaningfully address the plastic crisis by :
Reducing the production of new plastic,
Developing infrastructure to prevent pollution from plastic use and production, and
Ensuring that any efforts to create a circular economy for plastics are non-toxic, safe, and grounded in human rights.
Momentum is building, and in just a few weeks, representatives will gather in Nairobi, Kenya, to set the terms for negotiating a new global plastics treaty. This is the moment to make your voice heard. We need to make sure this instrument addresses the entire life cycle of plastics, including extraction, production, transport, use, disposal, and cleanup.
Jon, add your name to tell representatives to support a legally binding global instrument on plastics.
Thank you for your support for a coordinated and holistic solution to the plastic crisis. We couldn’t do this work without you.
In solidarity,
Jane Patton
