Electric car giant Tesla has obtained certification for a country headquarters in Shanghai, according to Sina Cars. With registered capital of one billion yuan (US$160 million), Tesla Shanghai is authorised to conduct research and development activities related to electric vehicles, car parts, batteries and solar PV products, as well as technical consultancy and other services. Observers see this as the first step by the US company towards setting up a manufacturing presence in China. It currently has only a sales and customer service presence. Tesla has not responded to media requests so far.
