New research findings indicate that motor vehicles were the main source of PM2.5 pollution in Beijing in 2017, according to People’s Daily and theaper. The results show that local emissions accounted for two thirds of PM2.5s, with the rest from regional sources. Of the local emissions, 45% were from mobile sources. Diesel cars in Beijing contributed the most among all the mobile sources.
The research was carried out by top Chinese academic research institutions including Tsinghua University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Peking University. Coal burning used to be the biggest source of Beijing’s PM2.5 emissions for years, before progressive energy policies eliminated coal from Beijing’s energy profile.
