Dear Jon,
On August 10, 1864, President James K. Polk signed an Act of Congress establishing the Smithsonian Institution. 173 years later, the Smithsonian has grown in ways wholly unimaginable at that time. THEN, the Smithsonian was a single building on the National Mall, containing an art gallery, a library, a chemical laboratory, and lecture and museum halls. Behind the Castle, the National Zoo had its humble beginnings as a motley crew of animals housed in the South Yard. NOW, the Smithsonian is the world's largest museum, education and research complex, consisting of nine research centers, 19 museums and the National Zoo. Plus – thanks to digitized collections, virtual and traveling exhibitions, affiliate museums and free educational resources – the Smithsonian's reach extends far beyond our physical walls. The Smithsonian’s incredible journey over nearly two centuries is a testament to what we can accomplish when we bask in the wonders of the world around us – and when we work together. Since the beginning, passionate, curious supporters like you have propelled the Smithsonian forward. Jon, we'd love to hear about your part in this journey – travel through the years with the Smithsonian and tell us about your favorite Smithsonian memories. | ||||
