Last week I discussed the deadly flooding that recently hit several regions. According to DPA, 24 people died nationwide as a result of these floods, while six people remain missing in the aftermath Tropical Storm Wipha's landfall up north.
In the Central Highlands, 3,900 houses were flooded, while 22,000 hectares of crops were inundated - this region grows much of the nation's coffee. Overall economic damage is estimated at nearly $50 million.
Local media has covered the impact of this terrible weather as well: streets on Phu Quoc were destroyed by flooding, while Zing looked at how massive resort development on the island in recent years has rendered local drainage systems useless (in Vietnamese - the drone photos are shocking).
Farmers in the Central Highlands are worried about damage to crops, and higher fruit and vegetable prices in southern Vietnam are expected, while people rushed to save 1,000 hectares of rice that was almost ready for harvest.
And in a truly revolting story, heavy rain around Da Lat caused a landslide at a garbage dump, sending a river of trash through farms and greenhouses. According to Tuoi Tre, the city has done nothing to clear the trash almost a week later.
