Pea protein had its breakout role when it was featured in Beyond Meat’s product line, and gained additional notoriety playing the lead in Ripple’s plant-based milk. Now, Oscar-winning director James Cameron (of “Avatar” and “Titanic” fame) and wife Suzy Amis Cameron are giving pea protein a place on the A-list.
While the demand for
pea protein is skyrocketing, the supply for this high-protein, highly
functional ingredient isn’t exactly robust. The Camerons are re-writing
this script (okay, my pun-quota has been reached and I promise I’ll lay
off now).
To amend this problem, the Camerons are
launching the largest pea protein fractionation plant in North America:
Verdient Foods Inc. in Saskatchewan, Canada. Beyond processing, the
plant will also develop plant-based foods for producers and provide a
profit structure and mentorship program to keep young Canadian farmers
engaged in organic, plant-based farming.
[Fractionation
is a process used to separate protein from starch to obtain enriched
protein concentrates, in case you were curious.]

Wheat,
soy – we will always love you. But it’s time to investigate novel plant
protein sources that can replicate the taste, texture, and nutritional
value of animal products and make the industrial farming of animals
obsolete as soon as possible. The health of the planet depends on it.
Luckily, there’s a whole world of plant-based opportunities out there.
In fact, The Good Food Institute’s SciTech team has outlined some of these opportunities in this guide to the plant-based meat industry! Check it out for inspiration, and then maybe you can call up the Camerons and get started!
