In the latest major deal in the energy sector, two state-owned nuclear giants merged this week. South China Morning Post reported that state-owned asset supervisor (SASAC) approved the merger of China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC), China’s second-largest nuclear power plant developer, and China Nuclear Engineering & Construction Corp (CNEC) after a 10-month process. The former will subsume the latter. The merger will allow for full vertical integration; encompassing engineering design, construction, and research. The number of state-owned companies under the central authority (SASAC) is 98, a drop from 170 in 2009.
