Dear Jon,
We are at a breaking point and farming as usual is not an option. At current rates, the world’s top soil could be gone in 60 years – that means 60 years left of farmable land. What we need is a drastic shift in the way that we farm and engage with our food.
For years, agriculture has also been
one of the biggest contributors to climate change. But it doesn’t have
to be. Farming has the potential to reverse climate change. We are at a breaking point and farming as usual is not an option. At current rates, the world’s top soil could be gone in 60 years – that means 60 years left of farmable land. What we need is a drastic shift in the way that we farm and engage with our food.
So how do we make this happen? Regenerative agriculture is the answer!
Regenerative
agriculture is a set of practices that restore soils and store carbon.
This isn’t some new-fangled technology, but rather a set of methods that
have been used throughout the world for generations. Now
it is time that everyone joins in.
Here at Green America we want to make Regenerative Agriculture a household word. And we need your help! Today, we are launching Re(Store) It! - a campaign to build awareness about the benefits of regenerative agriculture and the pressing need to put it into practice. Every major advance in agriculture – from organics, to going local, to non-GMO has been driven by consumer demand. Now, consumers need to call for restoring our soils to store carbon.
But this is just the beginning. Over the coming months, we will be rolling out tons of new content, educational materials, and practical ways that you can incorporate regenerative agriculture into your daily lives, and share with your friends and family.
In addition to our consumer education work, Green America’s Center for Sustainability Solutions is working to bring various actors together– from farmers to the brands you see on grocery shelves -- to build a supply chain that supports farmers' transition to regenerative practices.
Together we can shift the way our food is grown. We can move away from chemical intensive agriculture to farming that creates healthy soils for generations to come. We can use farming to stop climate change and build a better food landscape – one that supports farmers, soil health, ecological biodiversity, and healthy communities.
We are putting our faith in farmers. Join us in paving that path forward.
