5 Tips To Reduce Your Plastic Footprint

Jon,
A few weeks ago, we sent you a survey about reducing your plastic footprint.
The first thing we asked is what habits you’d like to adopt to cut down on single-use plastic. Many of you said you’d like to start buying in bulk.
This is a great resolution for the new year! Buying in bulk isn’t an option everywhere — but the good news is more and more bulk or zero waste grocery stores are opening up shop in Canada.
So here are our top five tips for buying in bulk:

1. Where to buy bulk

We recommend checking out Zero Waste Home. It’s an awesome website listing all the bulk stores you can find in North America. If in doubt, you can always do a quick Google search to find your nearest store! Note that farmers markets are also great spots to get produce not wrapped in plastic.

2. Get organized for bulk purchases

Once you’ve found a store in your area, make sure you’re equipped for shopping. Bring different sized tote bags (small ones for dry food, fruit and veg), large wide-mouthed jars (for bulk scoops), and small jars (for spices, teas and coffee). Don’t forget to weigh your containers at the store so you don’t get charged extra!

3. What you can buy in bulk

Not all products are available to buy in bulk, but fortunately the zero waste movement is growing — and more products are becoming available. You can find dry foods (rice, pasta, nuts, sugar, flour, fruit, etc.), condiments (oils and vinegars), maple syrup, spices – and more.
If food allergies are a concern, make sure to ask the store owner about your options. Many stores also offer laundry detergent, dish soap, shampoo, shower gel, and even toothpaste in bulk options!

4. Other products you can find in bulk stores

Several people asked us where they can buy bamboo toothbrushes. You can find them in health food stores and many bulk stores.
Reusable safety razors, and reusable food wrap are other great products to look out for when you’re out shopping.

5. Zero waste on the go

Coffee cups, take-out containers, sandwich bags, utensils… Everything we use for eating and drinking on the go has a reusable alternative, and it’s often possible to find reusable options in bulk or zero waste stores.
Even reusable straws are now available in stainless steel and glass! Just remember to bring your containers with you if you’re planning to eat out.
***
All these small steps add up to massive savings for the planet and future generations. Global plastic production is predicted to double in the next twenty years, and quadruple by 2050. By refusing, reducing and reusing now, we can help change course.
I hope these tips were helpful. Together we can reduce our plastic footprint on the planet.
Thanks for everything you do.

Help reduce plastic pollution, Jon
We need to inspire many more people to tackle ocean plastic pollution. Greenpeace is an independent organization that does not accept donations from businesses or governments. It's only because of donations from people like you that we can run our vital campaigns for the planet.
