When Chinese President Xi Jinping conducted his inspection tour of Hebei
Province this week, he did not have far to travel.
Hebei is a northern province that wraps around Beijing and its fellow
provincial-level municipality, Tianjin.
On Wednesday, Xi visited Xiong’an New Area, a
city started from scratch 100 kilometers south of Beijing and intended to take
on some of the capital’s non-essential functions.
The 6-year-old city is also becoming an innovation hub for the surrounding
region. Fittingly, Xi’s first stop was
Xiong’an Station, the future hub of China’s high-speed rail network.
This was President Xi's third visit to the New Area, which is destined to
become larger than New York City. He called its construction a “miracle.” Commentator
Robert Lawrence Kuhn discusses the ‘deep message’ Xi
brought to Xiong’an.
Next stop was Cangzhou, where
President Xi visited a wheat field and learned about the cultivation of crops
tolerant of drought and alkalinity. He also toured a coal terminal that has won
awards for environmental excellence.
On Friday, Xi visited the provincial capital Shijiazhuang and
made a stop at a semiconductor research institute.
