China released an investigative report accusing
the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency of using an "empire of hackers"
to launch cyberattacks on China and other countries.
The report was produced by the National Computer Virus Emergency Response
Center and a Beijing-based internet security company, 360. The Foreign
Ministry demanded that Washington stop using cyberweapons to conduct espionage
around the world.
“The large number of real cases in China and other countries disclosed by the
report once again testifies to CIA’s cyberattack activities around the world
over the years,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.
The report said the CIA orchestrated "color revolutions" in
foreign countries by providing dissidents with technology allowing them to
communicate anonymously and evade government surveillance.
It said the agency used a toolkit called "Weeping Angel" that could
turn smart TVs into listening devices. The investigative team also collected a
significant amount of CIA-related malware such as Trojan programs.
