Kia ora Jon,
This coming week, millions of young people around the world will take to the streets to protect their future. They’re asking grown-ups to stand with them. The big day in New Zealand is Friday 27th September - one week from now. There are strike marches and rallies organised all over New Zealand.
Burning dirty fuels like oil, gas and coal is causing the climate emergency. From the Arctic to the Bahamas, from the Amazon to the Coromandel, hurricanes, wildfires and floods are devastating people’s homes, livelihoods and the natural world right before our eyes.
Our young people are watching in horror as governments and corporations respond to this unfolding crisis with complacency, despite having already had a whole generation’s worth of time to fix it.
This past year has been a game-changer for climate activism around the world. A year ago this month, the world’s most respected climate scientists issued a stunning warning to humanity, giving us less than 12 years to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
And while most politicians have failed to step up to the challenge, the momentum for global climate action has only grown stronger — driven by the incredible courage of young leaders like Greta Thunberg and the ‘Fridays for Future’ movement.
We are at a turning point in our shared climate history. And this September is a critical moment for us to act. Students around the world have put their education and their futures on the line to demand climate action. But they can’t do it alone any longer. We all need to take risks, too, and join them on the streets to stand up for our collective future.
They’ve called on us to show up, and we’re not going to let them down. I’ll be there with the Greenpeace crew and a BIG banner - and Jon I’d love it if you could join us!
Come find us with a banner that looks something like this:
We know how to fix this climate emergency we are in. We already have the technology and the tools to power our homes, transport and businesses with clean energy from the sun, wind and water.
What’s missing is the vision, leadership and ambition needed from our politicians to stand up to big polluters and invest in a brighter future for us all.
We don’t have time to waste. The more people who join the strike this September, the greater impact we can have as a movement in calling for urgent climate action.
Greenpeace offices around the world are honoured to be standing in solidarity with these young leaders. We’ll be heading out to the streets to join the strike. Will you join us on the frontlines?
In solidarity and hope,
Amanda
PS. If you haven’t yet signed, join our call on the New Zealand Government to take the climate crisis seriously now.
