The US Department of Transportation has licensed Vietnam Airlines to operate flights to America, though there is still no timeline for when this might actually happen. VNA will be able to fly to Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Seattle and Dallas-Fort Worth through Taipei, Osaka and Nagoya.
Reuters reports that Vietravel Airlines, owned by the tourism company Vietravel, wants to launch its first flight by the end of next year, though they have yet to receive the proper licensing to do so.
Vinpearl Air and Thien Mien Group also hope to begin offering flights in the near future, while Vietstar Airlines has been licensed but has not started flying yet. According to VnExpress, all of this competition has forced VNA to offer cheaper tickets, while newcomer Bamboo Airways has eaten into the market share of VNA, VietJet and Jetstar. In terms of cost, it's a great time to be a passenger.
On the airport side of the industry, the government wants to nationalize the Airports Corporation of Vietnam, a company it already owns 95.4% of. However, it doesn't have the money to do this.
