Asia-Pacific forests: a future without borders

Asia-Pacific’s primary forest cover is now at the lowest regional level in the world – a perilous 19 percent of total forest area. Coordinated action in all dimensions of forestry and related sectors provides the only hope of reversing this trend and ensuring that the region’s growing populations can benefit from the forests’ rich ecosystem services and biodiversity.

New FAO Director-General elected

On 23 June, Qu Dongyu of China was elected as Director-General of FAO, the ninth Director-General since the Organization was founded on 16 October 1945. Qu Dongyu succeeds José Graziano da Silva and will take up office on 1 August 2019.

Large-scale forest restoration: the most effective strategy for climate change mitigation

A ground-breaking new article in Science magazine by ETH Zurich scientists in collaboration with FAO experts has identified that large-scale restoration is the most effective strategy for climate change mitigation. The study used FAO’s Open Foris tools to identify a potential one billion hectares of degraded lands and forests that could be restored without loss of biodiversity or encroaching on existing agricultural or urban lands.
