I've been ignoring this story on here for some time, but no longer. African swine fever, which is extremely contagious and deadly for pigs but harmless to humans, was first detected here in February after appearing in China last fall.
It has since spread to pig farms in 61 out of Vietnam's 63 provinces, according to AFP, while nearly 3 million pigs have been culled, roughly 10% of the country's pig population.
Researchers at the Vietnam National University of Agriculture claim to be nearing a vaccine for the disease, the wire service also reported, but experts are apparently skeptical.
Back in early June, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said "fighting African swine fever is like fighting invaders," so this is serious business.
