Meet Sri Lanka’s climate-savvy farmers
“Everything: their tea, the land, the environment, every surrounding area will become better with these practices.”

Jon —
In the misty hills of Sri Lanka’s best tea-growing regions, a transformation is happening. In this region famed for producing rich Ceylon tea, only 28% of the country’s original forest cover remains intact—a legacy of aggressive monoculture introduced by British colonists. In this video you can see how Sri Lankan tea farmers are using techniques they learned in Rainforest Alliance trainings to turn that around.

A small group of local sustainability evangelists are teaching smallholder farmers how to manage weeds without herbicides (HINT: selective weeding allows for “good” weeds to nourish the soil).
These trainings lead to higher yields and more profit for farmers, which eliminates the pressure to expand farms into the surrounding forests. It also prevents agrochemicals from washing into the local streams and rivers that flow to the nation’s capital, Colombo.
The Rainforest Alliance has already trained over tens of thousands of tea farmers in Sri Lanka alone to use sustainable growing methods. See what a difference these trainings can make for local farmers, our forests, and our planet’s future.

Psst! Take a minute to share this inspiring story.
