Two large solar power bases, each with a capacity of 500 megawatts, were connected to the grid in Qinghai province last week, Xinhua reports. One of the bases, in Golmud, has made history in China as the price of its electricity beat out coal for the first time: “The Golmud base sells its electricity at 0.316 yuan (US$0.05) per kWh [which is] lower than the 0.325 yuan benchmark price of electricity generated by coal-fired power plants.” The energy news outlet Beijixing proclaimed the Golmud base shows that solar has “changed from a supplementary energy source into a replacement energy source, and is gradually advancing towards centre stage” in China’s energy sector. The base comes online against the backdrop of last year’s dramatic slashing of solar energy subsidies, demonstrating even further the competitiveness of solar in the Chinese market.
