Earth Negotiations Bulletin kicks off 2019 meeting coverage at talks on a Global Pact for the Environment

Dear Colleagues,

With the conclusion of our first ENB meeting coverage of 2019, we are pleased to provide this new format for alerting you to our work to raise the transparency and accountability of international sustainable development decision making. This message includes links to our meeting coverage from last week and a preview of where our teams will be working this week and beyond.

Hot Off the Press

The Earth Negotiations Bulletin summary of the first substantive session of the Ad Hoc Open Ended Working Group Towards a Global Pact for the Environment provides an overview of the discussions on what governments might consider adopting to strengthen global environmental governance. Do we need a global pact for the environment? What may be the theoretical and practical purpose of a pact? What are its benefits and risks? Read the summary issue for additional questions, and some answers, considered during the talks: http://enb.iisd.org/vol35/enb3501e.html

Photos from the one-week session are here: http://enb.iisd.org/unep/globalpact/oewg1/

Happening this Week

Third Forum of Ministers and Environment Authorities of Asia Pacific: This meeting will address the theme, ‘Innovative solutions for environmental challenges and sustainable consumption and production (SCP).’ http://enb.iisd.org/ap/meaf3/

Negotiation of the Summary for Policy Makers (SPM) of the sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6): The SPM and GEO-6 assessment report will be presented for consideration and possible endorsement by the UN Environment Assembly in March. http://enb.iisd.org/unep/geo/6/

On the Horizon

The outputs of both meetings we are covering this week – the Third Forum of Ministers and Environment Authorities of Asia Pacific and the SPM negotiations – will feed into the deliberations at the fourth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-4) in March 2019. Our coverage of UNEA-3 (http://enb.iisd.org/unep/oecpr3-unea3/) is additional required reading as you prepare for UNEA-4.

The Global Pact for the Environment negotiations will continue in March. Our team will be there, bringing you a summary of the talks and photos of the proceedings.

In two weeks, our team will be at the 17th session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 17) (http://enb.iisd.org/desert/cric17/) under the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). This meeting will feed into the UNCCD Conference of the Parties (COP) that will take place later this year.

Other COPs taking place in 2019 that we are currently fundraising to attend include COPs for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), and the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions.
