In 2018, China made huge progress in addressing the problem of polluted drinking water, according to China Youth Daily. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment said that pollution problems in the country’s 1,586 drinking water sources (rivers, lakes, reservoirs) dropped from more than 6,000 cases a year ago to just nine this year. The unresolved problems are apparently due to delays in clean-up efforts over winter. At the beginning of 2018, the ministry had identified key drinking water sources and launched a year-long campaign to protect them. Threats faced by drinking water sources include residential sewage, industrial effluents and agricultural run-off.
