Yarsagumba, Tibetan for “caterpillar fungus”, has been a fixture of Chinese and Tibetan medicine for centuries. Now one of the most expensive medicines in the world, it drives the local economy in the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, according to a NewsChina report published in July. However, rising temperatures have forced Yarsagumba to migrate to higher elevations. The National Bureau of Statistics has shown the fungus is now in decline due to overharvesting and global warming, China News Service reports.
