China’s postal service administration released new guidelines for packaging used by courier services to promote sustainability within the industry. The guidelines emphasise the principles of standardisation, reduction and recyclability. Courier service providers are required by the guidelines to avoid the use of disposable packaging materials and explore containers that can be reused as many as 20 times. The growth in online shopping has significantly increased the number of packages delivered across China, creating enormous volumes of packaging waste. The new guidelines, which are non-binding, are an attempt to reduce the industry’s environmental footprint.
