Vingroup Launches an Airline

Vietnam Weekly - July 12, 2019

I guess I'll just start reserving a space here every week for whatever massive undertaking Vingroup is launching. In possibly the most unsurprising news of the year, Vingroup, the ever-expanding behemoth, has jumped into the aviation sector - I'm fairly shocked it took this long.

Tuoi Tre reports that the corporation has created Vinpearl Air Aviation JSC, headquartered in Hanoi.

At the same time, Vingroup announced a partnership with England-based CAE Oxford Aviation Academy to set up VinAviation School and Vinpearl Air Training Center.

The aviation school will be located within VinUniversity, which is currently under construction in Hanoi, and will train pilots to international standards.

The training center, meanwhile, will reportedly focus on more general pilot and flight crew training. Vingroup has also partnered with CAE Inc., a Canadian flight simulator manufacturer, to train 400 pilots and technicians for Vietnam's aviation sector each year.

Vietnam's fast-growing airline industry currently faces a pilot shortage, and there are very few flight training centers here - pilots usually have to go abroad to complete their training.

Interestingly, none of the coverage of this move thus far has made any mention of planes or potential flight routes, which makes sense as Bamboo Air joined the market very recently and hasn't been able to grow as quickly as planned given worsening airport infrastructure limitations.

However, as the airline shares a name with Vingroup's Vinpearl resort chain, I would expect to eventually see flights connecting major cities to places like Nha Trang and Phu Quoc where these resorts are located.

It's really remarkable to watch Vingroup relentlessly expand to industry after industry.
