A greedy new industry

Hi Jon,
Lying at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, the Lost City is home to a unique living world that we barely understand - yet it is already under threat from anew greedy industry.
Licences to explore deep sea mining in the area around the Lost City have been granted, but no mining has begun - yet. Plundering the seafloor with monster machines will cause irreversible damage to marine life and could even make climate change worse. [1]
Now, we have an opportunity to stop this destructive industry in its tracks. Over the next year, governments are meeting at the United Nations to agree a Global Ocean Treaty. If they get it right, it will put protection, not exploitation, at the heart of how we manage our global oceans.
We need the UK Government to do everything in their power to secure a strong Global Ocean Treaty that can safeguard places like the Lost City. The more people who sign the petition, the greater chance we have that governments will listen. Will you help us spread the word?

Right now, there’s very little standing between the natural wonders of the deep ocean and the mining machines; the vast majority of our oceans areunprotected and open to exploitation.
Scientists have been clear - if we are to conserve wildlife and avoid the worst effects of the climate emergency, we need to protect at least 30% of our oceans by 2030 from the multiple pressures they are facing. [2] Right now, only 1% of the oceans are fully protected, but for the first time in history, there’s a process underway to change this.
So far, over 900,000 people globally have joined us in demanding world leaders agree a strong Global Ocean Treaty that prioritises ocean protection over exploitation - thank you for being one of them. The more people who sign, the stronger the message will be - will you help us reach a million?
