President Xi Jinping
held separate meetings with leaders from three countries during a busy week of
diplomacy.
On Wednesday, Xi hosted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was making his 11th visit to China. The two countries upgraded their
relations to an all-weather strategic partnership. Maduro thanked China for its
support during Venezuela’s struggles with sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stephen Gibbs talked to experts and ordinary Venezuelans about their expectations from Maduro’s trip.
China also upgraded relations with Zambia during a
visit by that country’s president, Hakainde Hichilema. They elevated ties to a comprehensive strategic
cooperative partnership.
Hichilema is in China for a seven-day visit
focused on business opportunities. At their meeting on Friday, Xi Jinping told
Hichilema the collective rise of developing countries has become an irreversible trend.
Cambodia’s Hun Manet flew to Beijing for his first official visit as prime
minister. He met with Xi Jinping on Friday and said his country appreciates
China’s long-term support. Hun Manet succeeded his father, Hun Sen, in August.
