China issued a white paper Thursday unveiling how its route to all-around moderate prosperity coincided with comprehensive progress in human rights.
Calling poverty the "biggest obstacle to human rights", the white paper, titled "Moderate Prosperity in All Respects: Another Milestone Achieved in China's Human Rights," said that the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government have focused on rural poverty, advanced development-driven poverty alleviation and achieved a series of important breakthroughs, and have thus secured the right to an adequate standard of living for all the people.
Some key takeaways from the white paper:
- By the end of 2020, China had lifted all 98.99 million rural residents living below the current poverty line out of poverty.
- China has improved the living condition in multiple fields to ensure the poor population has access to safe drinking water, education, and essential medical services, said a white paper on China's recent human rights achievement.
- About 1.3 million rural teachers from over 80,000 schools have received living subsidies from the government as students from poor families can receive financial support during compulsory education.
- 150 million students are exempted from school fees and textbook fees each year. In addition, 25 million students receive living subsidies, and 14 million students from migrant workers' families can be subsidized for the school fees.
- In terms of medical services, basic medical insurance covers almost 100 percent poor population.
- China covers 30 serious illnesses with special funds for the poor people, benefiting over 20 million patients.
