Winds, rains, and dust storms blanket China

August 6, 2021

Red, red sky! An extreme dust storm in China turned the sky red for an entire day before the clouds slowly dissipated.

Violent winds and thunder hit China's Henan province. Wind speeds reached nearly 100mph (160kph) as rescuers were battling floods at a dam.

In northern China, high winds tore away roofs and windows in Hebei Province. Local wind speeds reached 83.66 mph (135 kph), the fastest ever recorded in the city.

See this dramatic footage from a powerful wind storm that hit southern China this week, blowing away small structures and sending people running for cover.

The floods in central China’s Henan province are expected to cost insurers tens of billions of yuan. Immediate economic losses from the deadly floods in Henan have surpassed 114 billion yuan. Insurance claims worth more than 11 billion yuan have been received as of August 3.

So, can this summer of extreme weather events be attributed to climate change?
