Purpose of the articles posted in the blog is to share knowledge and occurring events for ecology and biodiversity conservation and protection whereas biology will be human’s security. Remember, these are meant to be conversation starters, not mere broadcasts :) so I kindly request and would vastly prefer that you share your comments and thoughts on the blog-version of this Focus on Arts and Ecology (all its past + present + future).

Save the date: Nordic Bioeconomy Day at COP23 Nov 8th

What is being done in the Nordic countries to achieve sustainable use of the bio-resources and how is bioeconomy connected to the Sustainable Development Goals? Join us for the Nordic Bioeconomy Day at the Nordic Pavilion on November 8th - and let's discuss the big questions.

The Nordic countries have a joint #nordicsolutions pavilion at the UN Climate negotiations in Bonn on 6-17 November 2017, under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers. Save the date for the Bioeconomy Day in the Nordic Pavilion on 8 November.

One year ago we analysed 25 cases of Nordic Bioeconomy and came out with a powerful message: Sustainable bioeconomy is characterized by four thematic approaches, namely REPLACE - UPGRADE - CIRCULATE - COLLOBORATE. Meet some of the case-owners from our successful publication 25 Cases for Sustainable Change (norden.org/25cases), and learn from their experiences. Are they still on track? How have the cases contributed to a more sustainable future? What are the main obstacles?

We provide the experts - you come with the questions. It doesn't get any simpler! What is bioeconomy all about? Is bioeconomy really sustainable? How could you avoid green washing in the bioeconomy? What happens if we run out of our natural resources? How is the bioeconomy linked to the SDGs? How could the Nordic bioeconomy contribute in a global context? How do we avoid producing more than we need?

The long-term and sustainable management of forests is considered a core-value of Nordic societies. However, latest policy initiatives in Norden have been challenged by the scientific community. Under which conditions do value chains, from forest growth to wood-based products in construction, can essentially be interpreted as carbon sinks or sources? The event will bring together scientists, economic analysts, private sector actors and policy-makers, and cast light on the sensitive aspects of the issue to open for possible ways forward to use of wood in construction and other high value products.

BIOWATER produces Nordic added value through an assessment of the opportunities and limitations for a green bio-economy in the Nordic countries (stakeholder integration, policy instruments and governance models considerations). The assessment will be based on the scenario outcomes from elemental budgets and ecosystem service accounting exercises. BIOWATER will serve as the first Nordic science center and platform that provides solutions for land, environmental and water resources management considering potential and competing demand for biomass, land and water resources.
