The celebration of International Day of Forests 2018 is fast approaching (21 March) and we are excited to share with you the material and the key messages for this year’s edition, for you and your friends, groups, organizations and local and national institutions to join in the celebration. At an International Conference held in Mexico to kick-start the preparation process of the new Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA), which is due to be published in 2020, FAO launched an online platform, which is designed to help countries to increase the efficiency of their reporting, while also improving the consistency, reliability and transparency of their forest data. At the event, FAO also presented a new publication 1948-2018 - Seventy years of FAO's Global Forest Resources Assessment, commemorating 70 years of FAO’s commitment to reliable forestry data reporting. (In English, Spanish and French)

A new project in Gabon, implemented by FAO in collaboration with the Government, aims to support apiculture in community forests of the country, in order to reduce poverty in rural areas and promote both the sustainable management of natural resources of forestry communities and their livelihoods. In the framework of the project “Integration of the Amazon Biome Protected Areas (IAPA)”, which is funded by the European Union and coordinated by FAO, Ecuador’s environmental authorities hope to extend the portion of the Amazon biome under protection in the country and reach the number of 1 052 protected areas by May 2019. During his recent visit to Burkina Faso at the end of February, FAO Director General José Graziano da Silva expressed his appreciation for the newly arrived Delfino plough, a specialised piece of equipment that will enable FAO's EU-funded Action Against Desertification project to bring its restoration activities to scale. The rehabilitation of degraded land is a priority for Burkina, Graziano da Silva said, and FAO is willing to support the Government in its restoration efforts. (In English and French)

Assisting the UN, Government and NGO officers and practitioners with the planning and implementation of successful projects in the South Pacific Islands is the main objective of a new publication, which the FAO Sub-Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific has just released, with the title: Lessons learned from five years of nature conservation and development in South Pacific Islands. (In English)
