The China-Laos Railway started
cross-border passenger services on April 13, ahead of the Lao New Year holiday.
The first international passenger
train D887
departed from Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan province, at 8:08
a.m. (Beijing Time) for the Lao capital Vientiane, allowing passengers to reach
their destination in ten and a half hours.
The 1,035-kilometer-long (643 miles) railway began operation in Dec. 2021,
offering passenger services within China, while freight trains regularly
carried cargo across the Laos-China border.
The China State Railway Group Company said the opening of the border to
passengers comes as COVID-19 controls enter a new stage and demand for
cross-border travel surges.
Lao tourism authorities anticipate 368,000 Chinese travelers will visit Laos in
2023, up 21 percent compared to 2022.
