Honduras says it sees its decision to recognize “only one China,” cut
ties with Taiwan and establish formal relations with Beijing as a move in the
right direction.
"Diplomatic ties are not something for trade," foreign ministry
spokesperson Mao Ning stressed at a regular news briefing in response to a
question on whether China would give Honduras the almost $2.5 billion amount it
had reportedly sought from the Taiwan region.
Mao pointed out that the establishment of diplomatic relations is not a bargaining chip,
adding in recent years, Panama, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Nicaragua and
other countries have established or resumed diplomatic relations with China
without attaching any preconditions.
Many average citizens, along with analysts, say they believe the shift will bring a boost to
the economy.
China Media Group (CMG) has also opened its first bureau in
Tegucigalpa after China and Honduras established diplomatic
relations over the weekend.
This is the 191st station CMG has set up overseas. A ceremony for the office's
launch was held on Tuesday, local time, in the capital city, where CMG signed a
groundbreaking cooperation agreement with National Television of Honduras
(TNH).
