Latest on China's COVID-19 containment steps

Shanghai has been fighting a tough battle against COVID-19 in its worst outbreak in two years. 

Over 1.25 billion people in China or 88.74% of the country's total population had been fully inoculated against COVID-19 as of Thursday. Since the start of May, the overall COVID-19 situation in China is stabilizing, with the numbers of daily new confirmed cases and asymptomatic cases continuing to drop, said Mi Feng, spokesperson for the NHC.

But he added that there is still a risk of a virus resurgence and the situation remains challenging and complicated. 

Here are some latest updates:

  • Xi Jinping calls for continuous efforts in adhering to a dynamic zero-COVID policy
  • Nearly 15 million deaths directly or indirectly linked to COVID-19: WHO
  • Delivery workers have been providing essential services to Shanghai during the city's battle against COVID-19. The honorary title of "National Pioneer Worker" was given to a delivery station in Shanghai for the first time
  • Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized that vaccines are still highly effective against COVID-19, even with new variants of the disease emerging in South Africa and the United States
  • In Shanghai, train services have seen a sharp drop since the city closed off to fight the COVID outbreak. But railways have also been crucial in this period, so some personnel have been living at train stations over the past two months to keep services running
  • The Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV2 virus is intrinsically as severe as previous variants, according to a preprint version of a large U.S. study that counters assumptions in other studies that it was more transmissible but less severe

While under the dynamic-zero COVID policy, a group of young people with an average age of just 22 worked hard to create Yituan GO, a group-buying website that allows people to shop online, as well as obtain the most accurate and timely information for daily necessities.

It was quickly launched after 24 hours and soon reached more than 60,000 visits!
