The "May Fourth Movement" of 1919 was a defining moment in modern Chinese history. It ushered in Chinese patriotism and a democratic endeavor. Celebrating May 4th, also known as Youth Day, is still of great significance in contemporary China, as its spirit continues to inspire today's youth.
China awarded the 2022 May Fourth Medal, the top honor for young Chinese to celebrate their contributions to the country. The 155 recipients come from fields such as healthcare, agriculture, and education. Olympic champions including diver Quan Hongchan and weightlifter Chen Lijun were among 73 individual awardees.

China saw a total of 160 million domestic tourist trips during the five-day May Day holiday, down 30.2 percent from last year, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Affected by the pandemic, China's movie box office during the May Day holiday this year was sluggish, with box office revenue of 293 million yuan (about $44.17 million), a year-on-year decrease of 82.5 percent.
