In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, Happify Daily is releasing 31 new pieces of content to inspire, delight, and educate you so you can take better care of your mental well‑being.
Beyond just sparking a desire to hit the dance floor or settle down for a nap, music can have a positive effect on our mood—even if we're not always consciously aware of it.
Studies suggest that we may sometimes turn to music to help bolster and extend a mood, for example, listening to sad songs when going through a breakup, or to serve as a counterpoint to change our mood, like putting on a bouncy pop song when we're feeling blue or uninspired.
“Music is filled with everyday sounds that communicate everyday realities that are constructed to create a certain idea,” explains Mark A. Pottinger, Ph.D., a professor of music and the chair of the Department of Music and Theater at Manhattan College. "Often without words, these sounds can soothe us, energize us, or make us cry. Such is the power of music."
