Al-Jazeera journalist killing: China condemns all violence against journalists

May 20, 2022

"We are shocked by the incident. China consistently rejects and strongly condemns violence against journalists doing their job. We hope the incident will be handled in a just manner according to law," said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian on May 12. "We think the incident should be handled in a just manner."

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has called for investigations into the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, an Al Jazeera correspondent, who was covering an alleged Israeli incursion in the Jenin refugee camp when she was shot dead.

How did the incident unfold?

·  Israel’s military said they won’t investigate the killing of the journalist because it believes treating Israeli soldiers as suspects would lead to opposition within Israeli society, Israel’s Haaretz reports.

·  Abu Akleh was wearing a press vest and helmet when she was shot in the head, just under her helmet.

·  Eyewitnesses and other journalists at the scene say she was targeted, along with another journalist who was shot in the back, by Israeli snipers. Initially, the Israeli military said it would investigate the shooting and said they have narrowed down their search to identify the possible rifle that may have killed Abu Akleh, but without the bullet, they couldn't be sure.

·  The Palestinian Authority reportedly refused to hand over the fatal round, saying they didn't trust Israel, but would work with any other country.

How safe is the world for journalists?

·  The call of Abu Akleh’s family for a transparent probe into her killing joins the voices of the other families of the 28 journalists killed in the field this year as of May 19, according to Reporters Without Borders

·  Over 80 percent of journalist murders have gone unprosecuted in the last decade, the Committee to Protect Journalists 2021 Global impunity index found. Political instability, conflict, and weak judicial infrastructure are all cited as contributors to a cycle of violence against journalists and a lack of justice for them when perpetrators are rarely found or held accountable.
