Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday sent a message to Joe Biden to congratulate him on his election as U.S. president.
Promoting the healthy and stable development of China-U.S. relations not only serves the fundamental interests of the people in both countries, but also meets the common expectation of the international community, Xi said.
On the same day, Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan sent a message to Kamala Harris to congratulate her on the election as U.S. vice president.
President-elect Joe Biden has reportedly chosen his longtime aide and foreign policy advisor Antony J. Blinken to be America's top diplomat, U.S. media revealed on Sunday.
Blinken has visited China several times in official capacities. Analysts in China expect that Blinken might extend a hand to Beijing in some areas while challenging it in others.
In an Op-Ed in the New York Times this week, former Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Fu Ying said "Both governments have heavy domestic agendas to attend to, and so even if competition between China and the United States is unavoidable, it needs to be managed well."
Fu also wrote that she saw room for cooperation on a host of global issues, including climate change, public health, economic stability and digital security.
