WHY (AND HOW) TO MEDITATE

Why meditate? There are countless reasons, from the practical to the profound. Meditation can calm an excited mind, expand awareness, provoke new insights, cultivate compassion (for yourself and others), and improve attention. Ultimately, the Buddha taught meditation as an essential component of the path of liberation.

Buddhist meditation is the practice of intentionally working with your mind. Basic Buddhist meditation starts with practices to help calm and concentrate the mind. From there, you can begin to investigate the nature of reality and develop insight.

The most common form of meditation is breath meditation, in which you rest your attention on your breath. But, all schools of Buddhism have slightly different instructions for breath meditation, which you can explore on LionsRoar.com.

No matter how far we progress along the Buddhist path, we will always return to the most basic questions. So, in this Weekend Reader, we’re exploring an essential one: What is meditation, and how do you do it?
