Following up on Monday's special edition of Vietnam Weekly, city leaders in Hanoi have said that tap water in the districts impacted by an oil dump into the water supply is now safe for use. According to Tuoi Tre, officials have been taking water samples along every step of the supply system on a daily basis, and these samples have met Ministry of Health standards.
VnExpress adds that the water will continue to be tested until the end of the month, while tanker-supplied water will also be available for residents who want it for the next week. A criminal investigation into the three men believed responsible for dumping oil into the Da River is ongoing, so this isn't the last we've heard of this story.
This AFP story links the three recent environmental crises in Hanoi into a broader picture of how the drive for economic and industrial growth may be severely damaging the city's quality of life. (As a Saigon resident I'm keeping a wary eye on all of this, as the city is in the same economic boat as Hanoi but has thankfully avoided any large-scale health/environment scares.)
