Nordic Sustainable Cities – part of the climate solution?
The
Nordic countries are known for their climate friendly policies and
cities in the Nordic region tend to top global rankings on green
innovation and planning. But are they really all that green, considering
the heavy carbon footprint of the Nordics? And what examples can Nordic
cities give to others who may live under very different conditions?
An
upcoming White Paper presents a range of values, tools and practices on
which Nordic Sustainable Cities are built. As such, it shows a path that
is both tangible and scalable. It asks what makes
a sustainable city and lists a number of factors crucial to consider in
developing e.g. the Low Carbon City, the Compact Green City or the
Circular Economy City.
The
White Paper is part of the Nordic prime ministers’ initiative on Nordic
solutions to global challenges and aims to combine both public policy,
academic analysis and a business outlook.
Two of the institutions
under the Nordic Council of Ministers are involved in the project, with
Nordic Innovation in Oslo taking the lead and Nordregio in Stockholm
providing research and part of the outreach.
The
next step will be taking the project global via a series of events and
business exploits. Over the next few years, several activities promoting
Nordic solutions for sustainable, smart and liveable
cities to relevant stakeholders from outside the Nordic region will be
held in countries like India, China and USA.
These
will be funded by grants from Nordic Innovation and already include
activities like an urban lab where Nordic companies and experts will
meet city officials in India, and taking the Nordic Edge
Expo to China. These activities will strengthen the Nordic brand, build
networks between key Nordic and international stakeholders and
potentially boost export of products and services found in Nordic
Sustainable Cities.
The
Nordic city will also be the topic of events at COP23 in Bonn, November
6-17. Here the sustainability of the “Nordic Way” will be discussed
from a critical, but constructive perspective.
