Purpose of the articles posted in the blog is to share knowledge and occurring events for ecology and biodiversity conservation and protection whereas biology will be human’s security. Remember, these are meant to be conversation starters, not mere broadcasts :) so I kindly request and would vastly prefer that you share your comments and thoughts on the blog-version of this Focus on Arts and Ecology (all its past + present + future).

Jon, We've accomplished a lot in 30 years!

We’re reflecting on 30 years of successes while advancing our progress into the future.

In three decades, we’ve planted more than 160 million trees around the globe. In recent years, our Forest Garden Approach (FGA) has benefited more than 70,000 people. Today, we’re working with more than 7,000 farmers and their families across Sub-Saharan Africa to educate and implement the FGA.
We continue to monitor and measure our impact to improve and share our methods with others. And as we look toward the next few years, we’re executing our Strategic Growth Plan to better serve the farmers we work with and the environment that we protect. We could not do this work without people like you and as a valued supporter of Trees for the Future, we want to give you a sneak peek into our Strategic Growth Plan!

Trees for the Future Strategic Growth Plan - 2019 - 2025

Trees for the Future (TREES) will break the cycle of poverty and  hunger for 1 million people by planting 500 million trees in 125,000 Forest gardens by 2025.
To reach our goal, TREES will execute on three programmatic pathways that will introduce, educate, and optimize 125,000 Forest Gardens to take 1,000,000 people out of poverty and hunger in the next 5 years.
  1. We will EXPAND our footprint in implementing forest gardens throughout Africa.
  2. We will COLLABORATE with partner organizations who can accelerate the adoption of Forest Gardens throughout the smallholder farming communities they work.
  3. We will REPLICATE Forest Gardens with individuals who become certified agroforestry experts through our Forest Garden Training Center.

EXPANSION

TREES will continue to expand our proven FGA that provides a triple bottom line of helping smallholder farmers: enhance their dietary diversity and grow the nutrients they need; improve the environment including mitigation and adaptation to climate change; and ensure a living wage and increased profits for farmers through planting thousands of trees per hectare. This expansion will focus along trade corridors in both East and West Africa including the eastern edge of Lake Victoria.

COLLABORATION

Collaboration is an important element of our growth strategy.  Recognizing that the Forest Garden has multiple applications in different contexts we have divided the collaboration opportunities into three subcategories: Nutrition Improvement, Value Chain Sustainability to mitigate risks of natural disasters and climate change, and other Ecological Preservation tactics that ensure the multiple benefits of traditional Forest Gardens, while creating ecological corridors that preserve biodiversity and restore tree cover.
We are constantly identifying and evaluating collaborating partners for these focus areas. Some of which already include: Kenya Scouts, One Acre Fund, Ohio State University, Grameen Foundation, International Rescue Committee, and International Organization for Migration.

REPLICATION

Replication is the final element of our growth strategy.  Recognizing that the Forest Garden can be implemented as long as labor and land are available, TREES built the Forest Garden Training Center to empower anyone, anywhere, to replicate this model.

The completed Strategic Growth Plan will be released soon, we can’t wait to share it with you. In the meantime, help us prepare for our growth in the coming years with a donation to Trees for the Future, today!

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. I look forward to working together for another 30 years!
