leaders are gathering in New York City with interrelated goals:
ensuring jobs, peace and prosperity through sustainable development
while keeping national commitments under the Paris Agreement to limit
global temperature rise to avoid the most damaging effects of climate
change.
As diplomats and ministers at the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) focus on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), leaders from business, states and cities will participate in Climate Week NYC to demonstrate the resounding commitment to building a clean, resilient and inclusive global economy.
WRI experts will join these conversations, providing the science, data and analysis needed to help the public and private sectors contribute to raising their ambition and implementing their commitments.
Here are highlights of WRI’s participation.
As outgoing co-chairs of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), WRI Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Manish Bapna, and President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, will co-host Rebuilding Trust in Government, a high-level side event will bring together an international coalition of heads of state and government, civil society organizations and civic tech entrepreneurs to promote transparency in public action, citizen participation, and democratic innovation.
OGP is a multilateral initiative of 75 countries that secures concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens and fight corruption. As co-chair of the Partnership, WRI has played an integral role helping governments and civil society organizations co-create open government commitments that help countries achieve their sustainable development and climate goals.

WRI, CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) and the French Environment and Energy Management Agency will host, Assessing Low-Carbon Transition for Key Sectors, a workshop with ACT Project (Assessing Low Carbon Transition). If you ever wondered whether a company was ready to make the move to a low-carbon footprint, this session will present the identifying tool to do so. Delving into a company’s operational impacts, supply chains and dependencies, discussants will showcase the means for assessing the readiness of businesses for transitioning to a low-carbon world.
Companies from the retail, auto manufacturing and electric utility sectors will join NGOs, consultants and other stakeholders to demonstrate the use of the tool and promote climate leadership across sectors.

With the government of Denmark, WRI will announce the launch of P4G, an action-oriented, green growth engine that powers breakthrough partnerships among government, business and community leaders in order to speed the delivery of the SDGs and fulfil the commitments of the Paris Agreement.
P4G creates a space for businesses, national and city leaders, financiers and community advocates to join forces in the development and deployment of cross-sector ideas that accelerate progress.
The event is part of the Bloomberg Global Business Forum, a renowned gathering of business leaders that addresses economic, policy and sustainability issues in the twenty-first century and beyond.
Food loss and waste remains a big contributor to climate change and a whopping cost to the global economy of $940 billion each year. What progress have companies and governments made toward meeting SDG target 12.3 to halve food waste and reduce food loss by 2030?
Dave Lewis, Group Chief Executive, Tesco, Rajiv Shah, President, The Rockefeller Foundation, Esben Lunde Larsen, Minister for Food and Environment, Denmark, former White House chef Sam Kass, leaders from Kellogg, Sodexo, IKEA and others will offer updates at the Champions 12.3 event. The group will launch SDG Target 12.3 on Food Loss and Waste: 2017 Progress Report and make major a major announcement on date labeling and cutting food loss in supply chains. Expect new corporate commitments to reduce the more than 1 billion tons of food that go uneaten each year.

Nearly 300 companies have signed-on to the Science-Based Targets initiative, setting greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in line with climate science. Leading businesses increasingly recognize the opportunity and imperative of doing so. At the event, experts will brief corporate sustainability practitioners and consultancy firms on key issues to look out -- and plan-- for when setting these targets. Many of the businesses that have successfully validated their targets will share their experience on breaking through some of the common challenges that companies can face when setting out to reduce its operation’s emissions.
In 2010, developed countries agreed to jointly mobilize $100 billion per year by 2020 to support mitigation and adaptation efforts in developing countries. Meeting these financial goals will require engaging the private sector effectively and deploying public funds strategically.
In this discussion presented by the Governments of Sweden and France and WRI, panelists will highlight examples of private sector engagement with the potential to unlock trillions in climate financing. Innovative models for blending concessional and commercial finance in developing countries will be discussed with a impressive list of international officials. WRI’s Leonardo Martinez-Diaz, director of the Sustainable Finance Center, will serve as moderator.
