China urged unity of all
nations for responsible application of military artificial intelligence (AI) at
the first international summit on
military AI, co-hosted by the Netherlands and South Korea this week
at The Hague.
The conference, held from Wednesday to Thursday, comes as interest in AI is at
all-time highs thanks to the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT program, and as Ukraine
has made use of facial recognition and AI-assisted targeting systems in its
conflict with Russia.
China representative Tan Jian told the summit that countries should
"oppose seeking absolute military advantage and hegemony through AI"
and work through the United Nations (UN).
A total of more than 80 countries took part in the summit, with
over 1,700 participants from governments, think tanks, enterprises
and scientific research institutions.
